Lactose Intolerance Journey

It all started at 5 months old.
She refused the formula she was eating for so long. We changed the formula following a recommendation – they said it was close to fresh milk in terms of consistency and smell.
This is when the disaster occurred.

My baby had explosive diarrhea, she would eliminate anything and everything I gave her, until she didn’t have anything else in her guts, and started to eliminate the mucus on her intestines.
We went to the doctor and he gave us some medication for diarrhea, but didn’t ask himself what was the reason. He was treating the effect, but not the cause.

My husband made research and I talked to other people to find out what was happening, because there were already 3 days with diarrhea. She wasn’t dehydrated because I gave her liquids nonstop.
We found out we could try Lactose Free formula. So, in the 4th day we tried it. The results were INSTANT. We were happy, baby was happy.
Diarrhea passed, so I gave her the “normal” formula again. Guess what, the issue came back.
Without thinking too much I decided to continue with the Lactose Free formula.

How we didn’t see earlier she was lactose intolerant you might ask. Because no one told us the fact she was constipated as a reaction to lactose. And the next formula provoked diarrhea. So, both were signs, but only the last one was more straight forward. Also, the fact we couldn’t make her feel better with medication for colic, was also a sign.

At one year old I tried to give her yogurt and cheese and it didn’t go well.

So, Lactose Intolerant is a thing you deal with for life. I know for sure cause I also have it. I still love cheese, but hey! I am an adult and take some risks.
